A Reflection On Zero Super Bowls

I once had a dream of my super team making the super game that gives the winner super feelings. My team, however, is a perennial disappointment. Even when they’re good, they go to exquisite lengths to disappoint in the end. Instead, I have witnessed Super Bowls occupied by Aikman, Roethlisberger, Manning A and Manning B, and Brady – too many with Brady. While my team has been close, I cannot add the names of Cunningham, Culpepper, Favre, or Keenum, at least not while playing for the Purple and Gold.

Given the Vikings’ absence, I’ve never had a true reason to watch the super game. It’s become an exercise of picking a favorite commercial and wondering if Tom Brady will lose. The off-season carol has become, “There’s always next season!” My team’s shortcomings are apparent; they’ll definitely address them during free agency and the draft. How could they not? There aren’t enough missing pieces to address anything other than weaknesses. Cue the disappointment.

Once again, I will sigh and shake my head when asked how many Super Bowls my team has won. Once again, I sit here and watch Tom Brady be calm, cool, and confident while Bill Belichik curmudgeonly meanders the sideline. Maybe they’ll win; maybe Sean McVay’s Rams will prevail and the NFL will etch his likeness in the stars. It doesn’t really matter; my team isn’t playing. Ah, well, there’s always next season.
