Morning Coffee: My Gap in Space and Time

Good morning! I hope the world is being good to you and you’re being good to it.

Grab your coffee or beverage of choice and share a thought with me!

If you read about my dentist troubles, you may not be surprised to learn I needed a tooth extracted. I don’t know if I like the term “pulled” or “extracted” better, but “extracted” certainly sounds like more of a process, which it was.

First off, know the extraction was done at an oral surgeon’s office, and while I didn’t have any history here, I at least walked out of the initial consult with confidence and peace-of-mind. My story, however, does not focus on the teeth; it’s about the trip…my trip. I opted to go under general anesthesia so I would I would not need to remain aware of any drilling, pulling, or conversation taking place. I’ve been awake for that before, and it’s not worth the price of admission. So, after a little laughing gas, I got the sleep juice, and I…

I lost all sense of space and time. It felt as though I’d time travelled from a specific moment of time in the morning to a random moment in the afternoon. I couldn’t fathom how time had passed so quickly, even after I supposedly “woke up”. I have no recollection of my actions or conversations as they were related to me by my wife. I certainly don’t recall the drive home or how many times I asked my wife if she’d heard about Sam Neill (my priorities obviously in the right place). There is a black hole in my memory from about 10 in the morning until about noon.

I’m sure a similar effect can be created from too much imbibing, but this felt more complete than a blackout. There was no awareness of passage of time. My brain cannot account for the apparent lucidity I displayed. And I’m STILL not sure if my wife knows about Sam Neill.
