This is a call to relish those moments or achievements that may be commonplace for some but show you have more depth than you may have thought. Don’t ignore the assumed simplicity or commonality; if something feels like a win for you, treat it as such.

We’re coming off the weekend with a small victory.

I fixed my lawnmower.

But, before you start calling me the Jason Bourne of yardening, know it only ended up being a slipped belt. Still, I’ll gladly mark this moment down as a milestone because: one, I know mower basics but little about the mechanisms that make the mower work, and two, I didn’t even need to consult the infinite know-how of the internet.

This was a case of turning the mower over, examining what I could see, and happening to catch something that didn’t look quite right. A few tools later, plus hope and a prayer, and the self-propel functionality moved the mower forward as expected, this time without the presence of smoke. I breathed a sigh of relief that my year-old mower didn’t already need to go into the shop.

So yes, it was just a belt that had slipped off track and became pinched, but the fact I noticed the partially hidden deviation in the belt’s path, then was able to disassemble enough of the undercarriage to cleanly access and realign the belt, and then reassemble things back into their original look and function, is a mammoth win given how much I was dreading having to deal with this latest inconvenience. I’m also thankful the slipped belt was the culprit. Anything else likely would have been beyond my awareness and willingness to tinker.

What was your unexpected achievement from the weekend, or week, or month, or other arbitrary period of time? Again, don’t overlook the small stuff. In a world of growing complexity where we’re required to know more and more to do traditionally easy things, actually getting something to go in your favor is worthy of celebration.
