Morning Coffee: The Big Game?

Good morning! I hope the world is being good to you and you’re being good to it.

Grab your coffee or beverage of choice and share a thought with me!

Happy Monday! Anyone watch the big game? If you’re checking the calendar or the weekend’s scores and getting ready to ask, “What big game?” I don’t know. There wasn’t one of the traditional big games on like a championship or rivalry. (There may have been in some sport around the world, but I apologize, it occurred outside my awareness.) Any game, match, or contest could be your big game if it ends up being the focus for a period of time. Heck, if a non-sport activity or event required an inordinate amount of your time and energy, then I’d say that’s your big game.

I spent the end of last week and the weekend trying to watch kick-off matches of a new youth soccer season. Poor weather and an adventurous toddler made that difficult. Otherwise, I find myself turning on late-season baseball games and getting invested in the outcomes of my favorite teams’ games. My wife and I also spend a lot of time watching women’s college volleyball. With fast-paced action and intriguing season-to-season storylines, it’s becoming a must-watch sport. Football (the helmet and tackling one) is also just around the corner, and those Sundays’ outcomes inexplicably affect my mood way more than they should. Every football game is essentially the big game, and that’s without any money riding on them.

I’ve tried to get into soccer, and I’ve tried to get into hockey. There’s simply too much soccer to follow and really invest in at the professional level. Coupled with what I watch for youth soccer, there’s an oversaturation of footy in my life. Hockey, however, has potential, but I need to pick a team and get familiar with the names and stories. That itself is daunting, and I have to ask myself if I really need another something in my life. Maybe I can save my soccer and hockey interest for the World Cup and Olympics.

So, did you go big game hunting this weekend? What was the thing that called you to action? Was the outcome what you hoped? Sport or life, hopefully you put the energy toward it because it brings you some degree of happiness and joy.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a good week!
